The 80s

The 80s were a decade where we were introduced to some rather interesting fashion, Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, Molly Ringwald, Michael J. parachute pants, Miami Vice, gigantic cellphones and many, many more people/things.

So were the 80s a good decade?  This question is now being debated vigorously in the halls of academic institutions, offices, bars and family dinner tables. The fashion and music are forgettable, but then there are the classic films that came from the 80s: The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ghostbusters, Wall Street, Indiana Jones (not counting Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom because it was as bad as any of Vince Vaughn's recent work), Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles.

The shame that is 80s fashion

However, the fashion of the 1980s makes us look back on this era in shame as we remember what was "cool" to wear:
  • Jean jackets
  • Leather pants
  • Jumpsuits
  • Pastels
  • Blazers with the sleeves rolled up
  • Shoulder pads
  • Leg warmers
  • Mullets
Clearly, the fashion was about as pleasant as working in a North Korean labor camp.  Don Johnson and others made some bizarre looks popular and we now look back at pictures of us in the 80s and ask what the hell were we thinking?!  The fashion of the 80s should go down in history as a period where people decided to shame themselves by wearing absolute crap.

Final Verdict: Sure the 80s had some major drawbacks, but in the end a friend put it best: "The brilliant film Hot Tub Time Machine reminded me how great the 80s were."
